At Strategic Sanitation Services, we believe that ensuring the safety and health of our team is not just a requirement but a fundamental aspect of our caring for people. Recently, our Field Services Manager and Supervisors attended the OSHA 10-Hour General Industry training. This intensive program, facilitated by the ICW Group Risk Management Services, was an opportunity to deepen our understanding of workplace safety, reinforcing our pledge to maintain an environment where every team member is safe.

The training covered a range of topics critical to our daily operations. Over two days, our team delved into six hours of mandatory OSHA topics, including an Introduction to OSHA, Hazard Communication and the essentials of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). The significance of well-planned Exit Routes, Emergency Action Plans, Fire Prevention & Protection and the nuances of Electrical Safety were also highlighted, alongside the importance of Walking Working Surfaces and Fall Protection. We asked San Diego Supervisor Ismael Figueroa what his biggest takeaway from this section was and he said “Having an emergency action plan. Planning emergency exits, etc., for when an emergency occurs, so everyone knows what to do and where to [go].”

In addition to these core areas, the program offered four hours dedicated to elective and optional topics. These included Ergonomics, Bloodborne Pathogens, Materials Handling, Machine Guarding, Industrial Hygiene, Safety and Health Programs and an in-depth PPE Assessment. Each session was not just about learning the regulations but understanding their application in our daily work environment, ensuring we can anticipate and mitigate risks effectively.

The training was enriched with hands-on activities, knowledge checks, quizzes and comprehensive handouts on course topics. These interactive elements ensured that the learning was not only engaging but also retained, empowering our managers and supervisors to translate this knowledge back to the rest of the Field Services Team.

One of the highlights of the program was the development of a PPE Assessment Program. This initiative is a testament to our proactive stance on safety, focusing on tailoring safety measures to the specific needs of our team and operations. We asked Field Services Manager Alfonso Morales what his biggest takeaway was from the training and he said, “The importance of always looking at how we can mitigate any risk factors for any team members when a new service or community is added.” It’s a step forward in our journey toward not just compliance, but excellence in workplace safety.

The successful completion of the OSHA training is not the end but a milestone in our ongoing commitment to Caring for People. As we continue to build on the knowledge gained, we remain dedicated to fostering a culture where safety is ingrained in every action and decision. We are proud of our team for undertaking this training, and we look forward to implementing these learnings to make Strategic Sanitation Services. a safer place for all.
