In this month’s Leadership Spotlight, we’re featuring Bill Sowers, one of our leaders at Strategic Sanitation Services. Bill’s approach to leadership is shaped by his personal and professional experiences, with a focus on relationship building and creating a positive work environment. Learn how Bill draws on his interests to contribute to the team and build trust across the organization.
What is your professional background and how has it shaped you as a leader at Strategic?
My professional journey began in the restaurant industry, where I entered the workforce straight out of high school. Over the course of more than 20 years, I advanced from a server to general manager, gaining valuable leadership experience along the way. I had the opportunity to open ten new restaurants across various companies and served as a Training General Manager, helping to onboard and develop countless team members. These years taught me the critical importance of cultivating a positive workplace culture, leading by example and developing people through consistent feedback and support. I also learned to set clear targets, track performance and implement effective systems to work smarter—not harder.
Following my time in restaurants, I transitioned into a career in sales. I began by working with senior citizens, assisting them in securing life insurance and Medicare plans. This role was especially fulfilling because it allowed me to offer peace of mind to seniors by helping them plan for their healthcare and legacy. I later moved into sales within the janitorial industry, where I successfully shifted from individual sales to business-to-business sales. In this space, I learned to truly listen to clients, take a sincere interest in their needs and treat them like family. I discovered that asking the right questions and focusing on details were essential to finding the best solutions. Just as important was maintaining high activity levels—consistent effort directly translated into stronger results.
On January 1, 2024, I joined Strategic Sanitation Services as a Sales Account Manager. While I brought strong sales experience to the role, learning the nuances of selling to HOAs and apartment communities required focused effort. I embraced the challenge by asking questions, studying the industry and maintaining high levels of outreach and activity. In this role, I’ve learned the value of setting activity targets, cultivating relationships with community managers and collaborating across departments to drive success. My journey from managing restaurants to leading in sales has shaped me into a people-first and results-driven leader. I’ve learned the importance of building strong teams, leading with integrity and creating systems that drive success. At Strategic, these experiences help me connect with clients, support the team and continuously improve how we work together toward achieving a common goal, ensuring that every effort contributes to the company’s long-term growth and the satisfaction of the communities we serve.
Are there any specific values or principles that have guided your approach to leading your team?
My leadership style is deeply rooted in several core values. First and foremost is customer-centered thinking. Building empathy and trust is vital, and I strive to always see situations from the customer’s perspective to better serve their needs. Integrity is another cornerstone of my approach—I believe in being honest and transparent, never misleading a customer just to close a deal. Operational excellence is also a guiding principle. I’m constantly looking for ways to improve systems and streamline processes, as greater efficiency leads to better results for the whole team. Modeling these values to the rest of the team helps to cultivate a culture where we genuinely consider the customer and continuously improve.
Aside from your Professional responsibilities, what personal passions or interests do you bring to your role as a leader?
Beyond my professional duties, I bring a personal passion for servant leadership to my role. I genuinely enjoy helping others and always prioritize the needs of customers and team members in every decision I make. I also have a strong drive for success. With a background in sports, I thrive in competitive environments and love to see my team win. I’m motivated by the challenge of pushing boundaries and setting new standards together.
What aspects of your role as leader ignite your enthusiasm the most?
What excites me most in my role is celebrating wins—big or small. Recognizing success helps the team feel valued and motivated, and these moments of achievement also contribute to business growth and new opportunities. I also take great satisfaction in winning together. Collaborating with the team to fine-tune our processes and improve outcomes is one of the most rewarding aspects of leadership. Working side-by-side to raise the bar energizes me and reinforces our collective mission.
We are thankful to have you as part of our leadership, Bill!
